3 Year Post-Op Check-Up

On Wednesday May 2, 2012 the boys & I headed to visit Dr. Dave at CHOP in King of Prussia. Emory was due for his once a year check of his hips. He was feeling a little nervous, as usual when I told him we were going to the Doctor, but I assured him that Dr. Dave just wanted to check his legs & make sure that they are working well. I also showed him some pictures beforehand of when he was in the braces & casts. He was fascinated & at first denied that they were him as a baby. I explained to him that Dr. Dave already fixed his legs & that this would be easy-squeezy. Then I remembered that he would need an xray...ugh. Convincing him of this would be no easy chore. We arrived in plenty of time & Em hesitated as we walked up the ramp to the entrance. He told me that he wanted Harlan to get checked instead of him. Anything to get him inside, I told him maybe they would check Harlan first. As I remembered from previous visits, I knew we were in for some shuffling around. We finally got downstairs to check in, after a few delays of wanting to play with the upstairs toys. Then, back up we went to get the xray. Emory wanted no parts of going to get his "picture taken" & told me he would wait with the toys while I take Harlan back first. I scooped him up in 1 arm, Harlan in the other & off to the xray room. Next challenge, getting the kid to take off his pants. For a little boy who loves to be a "naked jay bird" at home whenever he gets the chance, he didn't want to show the nurse that he was a big boy & didn't wear diapers. After getting Harlan entertained for a split second, I lifted Emory up while the nurse dropped his drawers. She then took Harlan while I pinned (no lie) Emory to the xray table. He kept looking around the room telling me all of the things that he didn't want (the vest on, the other xray machine, etc). Click, click...done! And, back downstairs again. After a few minutes of playing, we were called back. Emory shocked me & simply followed the nurse, let her weigh & measure him & talked to her like such a big boy. We got settled in our room with a snack & another convincing of getting his pants off again. Thankfully we didn't have to wait long for Dr. Dave. He pulled up the xray of Emory's hips & was overjoyed with what he saw. Emory's hips are nearly perfect! He said if he didn't know better, he would have never know he ever had DDH so severely. Emory liked looking at the pictures of his bones & again needed to be convinced that they were his bones & not someone else's. Continuing to be a big boy, Em let Dr. Dave do a manual check of his hips. After putting his pants back on & packing up, Emory was thrilled to show Dr. Dave how well he could walk, run, jump & gallop...right out of the office! We are so very grateful for Emory's health & the amazing job that Dr. Dave did treating him. I could not imagined this day 3 short years ago. We celebrated with a trip to build-a-bear, where Emory made a Buzz Lightyear Smurf :)
